Locked away from your Mac? Our handy guide is going to show you how to get back in
If you’re a Mac user, you’ll know how critical your password is. Not only does it give you access to your Mac and all the information you store on it, but it also helps you to install and adjust software programs and search for any changes that involve an extra level of protection.
You may want to type your password in your login screen several times a day. However, if the password is broken and needs to be changed or if you plan to change it (as you can do on a regular basis), there are a few important steps to note.
Follow our step-by – step guide to quickly and easily modify and reset your Mac password.
You can use your Mac password to log in to your computer
How to change your password for Mac
There are a variety of main steps you need to take to update your Mac password. Next, log in to your Mac as you would typically be using your current credential.
The next move is going to Machine Preferences. Click the Apple icon in the top left corner of the screen and select Device Preferences from the drop-down menu.
Now, pick the Users & Groups icon from the list that appears. First, you’ll see a list of users on the left side of the pop-up box. Make sure you pick the right username from the list. Tap the Update Password button to change the password.
Finally, type in your old password, then type in your new password, validate it, and add a hint of your password. To validate the changes, press Change Password.
How to reset your password for Mac
There are a variety of ways to reset your password for Mac. Some versions of macOS allow you to reset your password using your Apple ID — it’s the easiest way to try it.
If you want to test the feature, try entering some password at the login. If a message saying that you can reset your password using your Apple ID doesn’t appear after three attempts, try another method.
In this is the case, press the button — a triangle inside a circle — next to the message and enter your Apple ID and password. In the pop-up, enter your new password, check it, and add a hint of the password. To confirm the changes, press Reset Password.
Finally, you will be asked to restart your Mac. When it’s up and running, log in using your new credential.
To reset your password using another admin account, log in to your Mac using your account-related credential. Second, press the Apple icon, and then pick Device Preferences. Now, pick Users & Groups, click the padlock icon at the bottom left corner of the pop-up box, and re-enter the correct admin username and password.
Finally, pick your user name from the list, press the Reset Password button, and enter the new password for the account. Check it and add a password hint before pressing the Change Password button.
To reset your password using either the Reset Password Assistant or the Recovery Key, FileVault must be turned on. To access the Reset Password Assistant, go to the login screen and wait about a minute for a message to appear informing you that you can use the power button to shut down your Mac and reboot it in the Recovery OS.
Switch off your Mac using the power button and switch it on again. Pick “I forgot my password” from the choices that will appear and enter, check, and validate a new one. Finally, press Restart and log in with your new credential.
The last way to reset your password is to use the Recovery Key. Browse the login screen and keep trying to enter a password until a message appears telling you that you can reset your password using the Recovery Key. Click the button next to the post, the same triangle in the circle we mentioned above, and enter the Recovery Key — make sure you use uppercase letters and hyphens.
Then, enter your new password, check it, and add a hint of the password. Confirm your new password by pressing the Reset Password button and restarting your computer.
After you have reset your password, you may also be prompted to build a new Keychain. If so, obey the instructions on the computer to do so. You can do this manually, too, if you like.
