Apple is launching a new iPad Air that looks more like an iPad Pro, starting at $599.
Apple is introducing a new iPad Air today that looks very close to the iPad Pro brand. It has a familiar template for its new iPad Air update. It’s a big design upgrade from the new Air, which brought back last year to sit between the iPad and the iPad Pro. Last year’s Air has thick top and bottom bezels and a Touch ID button. But this new iPadAir has much thinner bezels all around the show.
Apple’s latest iPad Air looks like an update of the iPad Pro version, which will be available for $599 next month.
Apple uses a large 10.9-inch Liquid Retina display (2360 x 1640) on this new iPad Air. It completely laminated with True Tone support and anti-reflective coating. To click this key, Apple has shifted the Touch ID fingerprint sensor to the power button at the top. This makes it the first biomedical iPad on the power button.
Inside the latest iPad Air, Apple is making some major improvements to the chips that power this device. It will fuel Apple’s A14 Bionic. A 5 nm chip with a six-core CPU (two high, four low) and 11,8 billion transistors. The company is promising a 40% boost in performance over the last iPadAir and better graphics support. Thanks to a new four-core GPU.
Apple claims it’s the “most advanced chip” it’s ever made. And also has powerful machine learning accelerators that developers can use. Apple has shown a range of applications at its press event today, promising that software developers will be able to take advantage of the strength of this new chip for their applications.
Fresh Touch ID for the power button.
Apple is also upgrading to USB-C on the iPad Air. Just like the iPad Pro, which will allow 20W charging which 5Gbps data transfers. Apple promising 60 percent faster LTE connectivity including Wi-Fi 6 and optional LTE versions.
On the camera side, Apple borrows the 12-megapixel rear camera from the iPad Pro and upgrades it with better video stabilization on the Floor. The front-facing 7-megapixel FaceTime HD camera is included on the Deck, with smart HDR and 1080p 60fps video capture support.
This new iPad Air supports the Magic Keyboard of Apple.
This latest iPad Air will also support the (new) $129 Apple Pencil that magnetically connects to the tablet. Apple’s $299 Magic Keyboard adapter will also stick to this iPad Air, making it even more similar to Apple’s iPad Pro. The new iPadAir will also support Apple’s $179 Smart Keyboard Folio and its $79 Smart Folio covers.
Apple has obviously refurbished the iPad Air to carry much of the iPad Pro functionality to a more affordable price point. it also lacks the high refresh 120Hz display on the iPad Pro, the Face ID support, and its updated lidar sensor. If these are all things you can do without, then the iPadAir looks like a good alternative.
Apple says the new iPadAir will be available next month in five colors: silver, space gray, rose gold, green, and sky blue, priced at $599.
