Apple introduces an improved 8th generation 10.2-inch iPad entry level of $329.
The cheapest Apple iPad will get even better.
Apple announced the 8th generation edition of its basic iPad. An update to its 10.2-inch entry-level tablet that upgrades the processor to a faster A12 chipset (last seen in the 2019 iPad Air and iPad mini models). While still retaining the same $329 price point. Education buyers will also be able to get a reduced $299 on the new iPad.
The A12 chip brings Apple’s “Neural Engine” processing capabilities to its entry-level iPad for the first time , offering twice the graphics efficiency. Apple notes that the latest model would also suit existing cases, including its keyboard case and those of Logitech. It’s always going to work with the first-gen Apple Pencil, much like the previous iteration.
The new iPad will also run iPadOS 14 and deliver new features that Apple has announced for the upcoming software update, including new Apple Pencil features such as hand-written text input.
NO USB-C STILL
Unfortunately, it seems that Apple is still sticking to its proprietary Lightning port on the updated iPad instead of the USB-C port used by Apple’s laptops, iPad Pro, and the newly announced iPad Air. It also features a simple Touch ID home button, something that is increasingly uncommon in Apple’s product lineup.
Apple launched a seventh-generation iPad last fall, extending the 9.7-inch display that had been the company’s flagship model for years to a larger 10.2-inch screen. This year’s upgrade is less dramatic than that, although the added computing capacity seems to be a welcome addition.
The new iPad will be available in red, silver, and gold colors in both 32 GB and 128 GB configurations. An LTE configuration will also be available (starting at $459). Preorders for the latest 8th generation iPad will start today, ahead of the release on September 18th.
